Here on the Dark Rye Tumblr, we’ll compile a mixtape of their secrets—a daily how-to and counter-convention dose of sass and entrepreneurialism for your own neighborhood.
We’ll offer perspective on our monthly themes as well as the pioneer’s blueprint: fresh insight and an idea-starter that makes every day feel like a sleeves-rolled-up Saturday morning in spring.
Hang out here to stay revived between Dark Rye feasts.

http://dark-rye.tumblr.com/

food52:

Therefore love your solitude and bear the pain of it without self-pity. The distance you feel from those around you should trouble you no more than your distance from the farthest stars. be glad that you are growing, and realize that you cannot take anyone with you: be gentle with those who stay behind. Be confident and calm before them, and don’t torment them with your doubts or distress them with your ambitions which they wouldn’t be able to comprehend. Find in a true and simple way what you have in common with them, which does not need to change when you yourself change and change again.
The Fantastic World of Mr Little Jeans

Kumar is 94 and he’s an acrobat, plate spinner, movie star, yogi. You’d be a rare creature to be that cool and be 30 years younger. And so it made sense to pair his wildness and wisdom and great big smile with the dreamy voice of Monica Birkenes, a Norwegian singer who’s popping up all over the place these days as Mr Little Jeans. ~ Kate Inglis

DR: You and Kumar are friends, right? A one-two love-spirit punch? Salt and pepper? Kindred spirits?

MLJ: I visited Kumar at his house in Oakland, San Francisco. We spent a whole day chatting, cooking, petting cats and getting to know each other. I got to see his photo albums going back all the way to his early 20s. There’s some very impressive stuff in there! He also taught me how to make the most delicious Indian dish—which I had never even heard of—from scratch, with about 15 different spices. For dessert we had a sweet chai tea à la Kumar. I still want him to show me some yoga moves, so hopefully he’ll make an LA trip soon, like he promised!

DR: Why did you name your band after Mr. Littlejeans? (Kumar’s character in the movie Rushmore)

MLJ: I love Rushmore and Mr. Littlejeans always made me smile.

DR: People talk about you as electro-poppy pop, as offbeat but commercial, as 1978–82 new wave-ish. They go on about your chameleonic guises, and they call you “the new so-and-so.” We slap a whole lot of labels onto music. What’s the descriptor that’s made you happy, and what has felt the most off-base?

MLJ: I don’t really mind what I’m described as, as long as it isn’t something else with “little” in the name. I think people get a little lazy and confused when there’s another “little” in there. The only thing I truly care about is if people like it.

DR: There’s a line in your song Oh Sailor: “If you feel like you’re out there on your own / There’s someone watching over you.” Who’s watching you?

MLJ: Well, that line in particular is a little morbid I guess. But morbid in a nice way! The general idea behind it is that someone out there is always with you (even if they’re not in the room with you), still with us or passed away, or just somewhere else in the world. At the time I wrote the song, she was grieving the loss of someone close and would have nightmares about it most nights. “Mrs. Sailor” has plenty of people out there who love her and were/are thinking about her, and I just wanted her to remember that and feel it.

(ed: if this hadn’t been an email interview, the Dark Rye-ers that be would have vigorously agreed with the nice-kind-of-morbid and said, “Morbid can be so pretty, Mr Little Jeans, or at least your kind of morbid, if that’s what you call it, because we love your sounds. And anyway, doesn’t everyone want to be watched over? You know. The good kind of watching over. The magical kind. Everybody likes that.)

DR: Pop music is a noisy place. What keeps you faithful to your vision?

MLJ: I try to make music I like. It can be very difficult at times, but that’s generally what I aim for. Hopefully, if I like it, other people will too.

DR: What three things do you do every morning?

MLJ: Snooze, snooze and smoothie! I’m more of a night person, so the snoozing seems appropriate most days.

DR: Do you ever worry about being subject to someone else’s idea of what your success should look like?

MLJ: I used to feel that pressure years ago, but I don’t anymore. It’s the best feeling. I can stand behind what I do 98% of the time these days!

DR: For Kumar, it’s meditation. Bead counting and breathing. What settles you?

MLJ: I find both yoga and watching my favorite TV shows good settlers. I also really appreciate ice cream when times get rough. The best thing would probably be just hanging out with a friend or two though. Works every time!

DR: Kumar likes to blur the lines between enlightenment and entertainment. He’s pretty much been doing that for 94 years, give or take. When was the last time you were enlightened and entertained at the same time?

MLJ: That would be the last time I was with Kumar. It’s not an everyday occurrence, I’ll tell you!

DR: From 2001 to 2006, and then again from 2009 through 2011, Norway has had the highest human development index ranking in the world. In 2011, Norway also had the highest ranking on the Democracy Index and the Legatum Prosperity Index. According to UNDP, Norway is the world’s best country. And yet it’s just quietly, continually awesome. What’s the secret?

MLJ: Must be something in the water. It’s truly quite something! It does feel reassuring that I have that to come back to, when I tire of exploring the rest of the world.

DR: You live in London, England, now, which is a pretty fantastic city, and then you spend a lot of time in LA too. What’s the best-ever everyday Norwegian thing that you miss the most?

MLJ: I actually do miss the water a lot. You can drink it from the tap, and it’s good for your skin. That and salty licorice.

DR: You write your own material, and you’re involved in production. What aspect of making music do you look forward to the most—the writing, recording, tinkering, performing? And what makes you grit your teeth?

MLJ: Both the writing process as well as performing can be equally as rewarding as it is teeth-gritting. And if anything isn’t so enjoyable for some reason, it’s probably because I put too much pressure on myself. I’m working on it though. I try to make a certain allowance for some things not being up to scratch; accept it and move on. If I don’t, it’s easy to get too caught up in it and go a little insane. And nothing feels as good as finishing a song that you’re happy with, or doing a show for people who yell nice things at you and sing along!

DR: Creatively speaking, what lights you up?

MLJ: Other people and other peoples’ music. It really is that simple for me.

DR: You’ve already got yourself an enviable stash of songs that fans and critics adore, and yet you’re at the beginning of your career. Tell us about someone out there whose musical trajectory inspires you.

MLJ: Whoever is out there continuing to do what they love, while being able to pay the rent at the same time—those people inspire me. Trust-fund kids don’t count. It can be pretty tricky.

DR: Imagine you’re 94 years old. What will make you smile like Kumar?

MLJ: Good food and most things un-PC!

Marinating salmon in yogurt and then cooking it on a covered grill produces tandoori-style salmon with a delightfully silky texture.
When purchasing fresh salmon, there are many factors that influence the cost, flavor and health attributes. While there are differences between the types of salmon, the one thing to keep in mind is that they are all very good and healthful, just some more so than others. The nutritional attributes more recently being brought to focus by science and with the help of mass media, have created a newfound following for this very precious resource.

Not everyone can run a marathon or even half a mile. Not everyone can make delicious homemade gluten-free muffins using only locally sourced ingredients. But everyone can meditate, and you should try it, too. Why? Because it’s an activity that you can do sitting down while wearing your most comfortable pants.
Lisa Giroday, a modern-day farmer, is on a mission to make Vancouver greener, one urban garden at a time.

Ms. Chatelaine Lisa Giroday
Age: 30
Occupation: Co-founder of Victory Gardens
Hometown: Vancouver

Most of us wouldn’t leave the house without stashing lip gloss or mascara in our handbags. But for 30-year-old Lisa Giroday, gardening gloves and twine are the musts. As the strategist behind Victory Gardens, a city farming enterprise she runs with two friends in Vancouver, Lisa flexes her green thumb and spreads their motto: “We help you grow food!”

Whether it’s converting a condo balcony into a mini veggie patch or helping people master the basics (indoor herb garden, anyone?), Lisa and her team share their know-how in group workshops and one-on-ones. “We’re showing people how to rethink their urban spaces,” says the mostly vegan devout foodie. “Everyone is disconnecting from their food source and from what real food actually tastes like. We’re trying to change that.”

Let’s do that sometime. Let’s take over. Scribbles, Doodles, and Play. All the important stuff. All the beginnings.

This recipe comes to us courtesy of Chef Johnathan Sundstrom, James Beard Foundation Award winner and chef-owner of Lark in Seattle, Washington. If razor or Manila clams are unavailable, use whatever clams are plentiful in your area, such as littleneck clams. Add delicious decadence with a drizzle of black truffle oil or shavings of fresh Oregon truffles, which give the dish a luxurious feel without costing a fortune, as Oregon truffles are available for about 1/10th of the price of their European counterparts…

Now that’s something that makes life worth living!…Oh, to just grip your handlebars and lay down to it, and go ripping and tearing through streets and road, over railroad tracks and bridges, threading crowds, avoiding collisions, at twenty miles or more an hour, and wondering all the time when you’re going to smash up. Well, now, that’s something! And then go home again after three hours of it…and then to think that tomorrow I can do it all over again!” ―Jack London

Look at the hot, buttery potato. In its simplest state — with just a little butter and some kosher salt — that thing is going to be completely delicious. Now add herbs, cheese, meat, veggies, and you’ve got a great (and probably cheap, sequester-friendly) dinner on your hands…
